Q&A: How do I create a metal engraving effect?

by Rosie Tanner. 30 Jun 2009

I want to cut text into the front of a metal safe. Can anyone help me out with this?

Photoshop is such a powerful package that it provides you with many ways to produce creative yet realistic effects. A font engraved into a metal surface is easy enough to achieve by using the Horizontal Type tool to create the text, followed up with a quick tinker with Layer Styles. Check out the steps below in order to engrave text in metal without breaking into a sweat.

metal01
01 Type it
Open your background image of a safe (or any metal surface.) Grab the Horizontal Type tool (T) and type your text using a black foreground colour. Now click and drag the cursor outside the text field to drag the text into position on the surface of your safe.

02 Layer blends
To sell the stamped text illusion, you need to make the text layer take on the texture of the underlying metal photo. This gives a more realistic effect. In the Layers palette target the text layer and set its blending to Soft Light. Reduce its Fill Opacity to 34%.

03 Bevel it
Click the Add a Layer Style icon and hit Bevel and Emboss. Set Style to Inner Bevel and Technique to Chisel Hard. Set Depth to 41%, Direction to Up, Slide Size to 9px. Experiment with the light’s Shading Angle and Altitude until the text looks like it’s cut into the metal.
