We review the top 6 books that teach you everything you need to know about Adobe Photoshop CS5

Just picked up your copy of CS5? Us too, and we have found that there has been a flurry of books released to help show off its capabilities, as well as explaining all the essential functions and techniques from previous versions too. Here we look at just six of the many titles that have been unveiled in the last month or so.

Adobe Photoshop CS5: Digital Classroom
Jennifer Smith and the AGI Creative Team

£34/$50
This book offers a complete package for those who want to learn Photoshop Cs5 inside out. Adobe Photoshop CS5 For Photographers
Martin Evening
www.focalpress.com

£30/$55
This is an absolutely massive tome with over 700 pages of advice aimed at digital photographers. The chapters work through a logical workflow, from configuring Photoshop to getting the best dynamic range from your photos, or converting them to black and white effectively. Teach Yourself Visually: Adobe Photoshop CS5
Mike Wooldridge
www.wiley.com

£22/$30
The Teach Yourself Visually series is very different from many other manuals and guides, and is designed to appeal to those who prefer to read less and do more. Each chapter has step-by-step guides, accompanied by simple instructions and large screenshots, plus essential tips throughout. Each tool mentioned is accompanied by the icon for that tool, helping you to learn your way around the Photoshop interface simply and quickly.

Photoshop CS5 for Dummies

Peter Bauer
www.dummies.com

£22/$30
The ever-popular For Dummies series covers every possible topic that you could ever think of now, and as expected the CS5 version is an in-depth guide to the ins and outs of Photoshop, written so that even beginners to the software can be up and running in no time at all. There are lots of common questions scattered throughout that are answered as you go through, as well as highlighted top tips.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 Bible
Lisa DaNae Dayley and Brad Dayley
www.wiley.com/compbooks

£30/$45
Does what it says on the tin! An all-inclusive title that offers a thorough understanding of Photoshop CS5, from start to finish, working through a consistent workflow structure. This is a black-and-white manual, however, so the screenshots don’t stand out as well as they could, but there is a 16-page full-colour insert to show the results of the techniques discussed.

Adobe Photoshop CS one-on-one
Deke McClelland
www.oreilly.com

£38.50/$50
Deke McClelland is a well-known name in the Photoshop industry, being a member of the Photoshop Hall of Fame and author of 20 Photoshop books. As expected, this is an authoritative book, split into lessons going through common and more creative tasks in Photoshop. It also comes with access to five hours of video hosted by Deke via the web, to keep on learning more skills and techniques.

Looks good That cs5 book cs5 by Deke. Good stuff. The book by martin Eveninig and the cs4 book needs a new editor !! popup and layers box to small to see with a magnifying glass. Its not a training book but show and tell on imprsssing with fotos. Where is the turoral and help as the Phothopshop user magazine has. good layout and sizing there; As does 3d artist and Advanced photohops by imagine sub.co.uk.
They know how to write, train and explain what they are doing !

Anyway. I’m also looking for the book; How to cheap in PS. cs5 by S. Caplin.

The trick here is shipping to Dubai, UAE where I”m at now.. Whats the beast reates to send 2 or 3 at once. ?

Martin Evening’s Photoshop CS5 for Photographers seems as if it was raced out the door to fend off the other authors’ competing books. There is very little on the absolutely wonderful new CS5 features and many of those new features are not included in the index (shame on the publisher!!!) – so I don’t know how you’re supposed to find them in that huge book.

I suggest going for Deke’s book (too bad this particular one of his didn’t include a DVD like others he’s produced…), or the Photoshop CS5 Bible – if you don’t mind the B/W format. Those last two would be good complements to each other, rather than either or’s. They are completely different approaches.
